Story
The Barbara bus fund is a relatively small charity providing wheelchair accessible vehicles to people who are in need of them. It started off with Barabara Werndly who was an inpatient at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hosptial after becoming paralysed as a result of contracting polio when she was just 13 years old. Barbara soon realised the difficulties which existed for people requiring the use of wheelchairs to have access to specially adapted vehicles enabling them to get out and about with family and friends.
So in 1968 the Barabara Bus Fund was created, with the aim of providing a means of transport for people within the hospital and the surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, were unable to use public transport or standard vehicles. Since then the Fund has grown in its size and areas of the UK in which it provides its unique and valued service to patients and families in need, without charging families for the service, you are just asked to donate what you can afford.
Since my dad's devastating brain injury in 2010, leaving him confined to a wheelchair, we have used the charity on countless occasions, meaning that my dad has been able to attend family events around the holidays, sporting occasions, school prize giving and even his goddaughter's wedding! Without the charity, this would likely have not been possible and has made our families life a little easier.
As most of you know I have always been sporty, but I have never been a runner and fitness has been a real struggle for me. This is why running the Bath Half Marathon is going to be such a challenge! So I would really appreciate as much support as possible to make a genuine difference to a charity that makes a real difference to so many others and improves their quality of life, including both mine and my families.
