Big Nacoa Walk 2023 - White Peak Challenge · 29 April 2023 ·
The last weekend in April this year will see us celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary and also take part in the Nacoa Big Walk 2023.
This is a beautiful walk through the Manifold Valley & Dovedale 33 km (21 miles) with 400 metres of ascent taking approx 10 hours.
So... don't send us an anniversary card, sponsor us instead!
Why Nacoa?
Amy's Dad, Steve, died in 2020 after many years of alcohol addiction.
She now works closely with them, raising funds and awareness of the myriad affects being a COA (child of an alcoholic) has. She's appeared in two TV documentaries, most recently with Nacoa patron Vicky Pattinson ("My Dad, Alcohol & Me" in 2022), been interviewed by Dave Wilson (a.k.a. Sober Dave) for his podcast "One for the road" and been to the Houses of Parliament with Nacoa during COA week (February 2023). She no co-hosts a podcast with Sarah Drage "Sarah & Amy - The Children of Alcoholics podcast" where they talk to a variety of guests and share their own experiences openly and honestly in an attempt to help others.
She also volunteers at a large local secondary school helping to create a support system for children, and routinely provides teacher training as well as presentations in any setting she's asked to (and a few she isn't!).
John was witness to the toll Steve's illness took on both Steve and other family members over a period of 20 years. He can attest to how difficult it can be to support someone affected by addiction and someone affected by a loved ones drinking. He has also seen how Nacoa have provided support to Amy and how her involvement with the charity has helped her so much since 2020.
Plus, after 16 years of marriage he'll do as he's told and walk 21 miles for a quiet life ;-)
Thank you for reading, supporting and (hopefully donating). It means everything.
