Story

Amy has been suffering from ear infections since the age of nine months old. Amy was referred to ENT at the age of two in 2008 and she was diagnosed with glue ear. Amy got her first set of grommets inserted in January 2009 ( just before her third birthday) which appeared to have worked but unfortunately the ear infections came back so we were referred back to ENT and in June 2011 ( five years old ) another set of grommets were inserted, unfortunately the grommet in the right ear fell out after only being in for four months, when we went back to ENT for her review and they decided to insert another grommet which went in February 2012 ( just before her sixth birthday).
In June 2014 ( eight year old ) we were referred back into ENT and this time we were giving the possible diagnosis of Tinnitus and Hyperacusis. Amy was referred to the Tinnitus and Hyperacusis clinic which we saw a specialist in July ( eight years old) who confirmed that Amy has Tinnitus and Hyperacusis. Amy has been doing TRT ( Tinnitus retraining therapy) which has helped her.. Amy is not able to do some activities like her friends like going to a music concert and in school struggles doing music.
After our review in the November 2014, ( eight year old ) ENT team decided to insert another set of grommets, in December 2014 Amy had her fourth set of grommet inserted into her right ear and third set into her left ear, in February 2015 ( just before her ninth birthday ) a foreign body was discovered in her ear canal which had to be surgically removed, unfortunately Amy had ongoing infections in the right ear which resulted the grommet having to be surgically removed in June 2015 ( nine years old ).
ENT team referred Amy to paediatric audiology and in July 2015 ( nine year old ) Amy was diagnosed with Sensorineural mild hearing loss. Amy attends audiology every six months for regular hearing tests. Amy is not aided but does lip reading which she has taught herself from a very young age..

In August 2016 ( ten year old ) Amy was seen by ENT and they now think that Amy has problems with her Eustachian tube and she is now having difficulties breathing through her nose. Amy has had tests done and we are now waiting on an appointment for her follow up appointment..

Amy has been attending a support group "Deaf Action" in Edinburgh since October 2015. This group has helped Amy to build up her confidence and make friends with those who also have some form of hearing loss. This group does all different activities and we don't have to pay for anything apart from providing pack lunches if it's all day..

Youth workers and volunteers are fantastic and very supportive towards the children and also to us the families..

This group is for a deaf child, siblings of a deaf child or children who's parents are deaf. Amy's big sister Megan also gets involved in the group which has helped her to understand what Amy is going through and Megan has also made friends with some of the older girls who attend.

We don't know what the future holds for Amy but there is one thing, we can't thank this group enough as they have gave Amy all the support as well as us as a family.. Thank you.

Amy is running to raise money for Children In Need, to say Thank You for funding the group..
