Story

I am joining my sister and brother on 24th September to do a 10 km walk in Hyde Park to raise awareness of Mouth Cancer.

Our lovely and dearest older brother Poldi battled a 10 year history following his diagnosis with Tongue cancer at the age of 51.It started with a persistent ulcer at his tongue and bleeding of his gums which didn't go away.He underwent radical surgery which appeared to have cleared the cancer for 5 years but sadly it returned.

Over the next 6 years, he underwent further major operations, immunotherapy and intense radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Again each time it was thought to have cleared the tumours but the cancer kept coming back. Despite robbing him of his speech, his swallowing and causing  him severe pain and deformity, Poldi soldiered  on continuing to be the brave, selfless and uncomplaining person he always has been. Poldi passed away June 2020 in Madrid and despite COVID we feel very lucky to have been able to have been by his bedside. His lovely wife Leticia and 4 children, my mother, my sister, brother and I will forever miss him but will always be so proud of him.

Poldi would not want this to happen to anyone else and we know that Mouth Cancer is on the increase! He would urge anyone with similar persistent sores, ulcers or  bleeding of the mouth as he experienced, to get help urgently. He would also want to ensure that those diagnosed and treated, have ongoing checks ups despite resolution of the cancer.

We are sure that our deeply missed brother will live on in the memory of all his dearest friends and family and hope that his experience will bring to the attention the early warning signs and symptoms and therefore help others.

There are over 8700 new cases of mouth cancer in the UK each year.  Each year 2722 lives are lost.   The Mouth Cancer Foundation exists to raise awareness and support for mouth cancer. The charity endeavors to promote, protect, educate and support the public. Informing people on the signs, symptoms, risk factors, facts and figures and key causes of mouth cancer is extremely important and something which the charity is very passionate about.

Thank you for visiting my Mouth Cancer 10 KM Awareness Walk fundraising page. Join us in London's Hyde Park on Saturday 24th September 2022.
