Story

Creswell Crags is one of my favourite prehistoric sites! Now they need your help to stay open to visitors and continue protecting the rare archaeology in the limestone gorge.

Ice Age archaeology in Britain is extremely rare, the then corner of the European continent would have been a barren, climatically hostile frontier. There are very few places in Britain where you can see the places these pioneers lived and produced artwork (on the walls and carved objects). The fantastic visitors centre and tours help paint the picture of life in this distant time when the landscape looked very different. I especially hold the Crags in special regard as I researched some of its archaeology for my PhD thesis which focused on Ice Age hunting technology and strategies.

Here's a message from the Creswell Crags appeal:

Creswell Crags is an educational charity which welcomes visitors from across the country to learn, experience and discover the fascinating history of the last Ice Age and Stone Age. As a charity, the Creswell Heritage Trust, previously received local government support, however, this ended in early 2020. Since then Trust has sought the support of its visitors, through donations, ticket sales and car parking, to remain open and operational for public use and enjoyment. The generous support of our visitors helps us to teach children about prehistory and wildlife, supports vulnerable young people to learn and develop skills, and keeps the beautiful gorge maintained and protected for public use. In this unprecedented time of uncertainty we are asking for our visitors continued support to help us continue in our mission to preserve the site and educate visitor about prehistory and archaeology for future visitor to enjoy.
