Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

At just 13 days old our little brother Bodhi developed sepsis.

It was a really really scary time and he spent almost a week in hospital.  For 2 days he was in the high dependency care unit with lots of wires attached to him and we were all really worried.  The machines kept making noises and were so loud.  He had a tube in his hands where the nurses gave him some medicine.

Mum was the one to notice he was poorly, he was really hot and breathing fast. He would only settle when cuddling Mum and every time she put him down he cried.  He didn’t feed much and he didn’t have many wet nappies.  Later on when at hospital his skin had gone all mottled.

The nurses and the doctors at the hospital saved his life. They were amazing! They were kind to us too as we were all worried.  They showed us where the toy room was so Jake could play as he was too little and didn’t understand what was happening and why mum and Bodhi couldn’t come home with us.  We didn’t understand either, we just knew he got really poorly.

The GP mum first went too though was not good. He didn’t listen to her worry’s and sent her home telling her there was nothing wrong and she should rest and enjoy her baby.  But thankfully mum listened her her gut and took Bodhi to another GP for a second opinion. We were told later if she didn’t he would have died.

So that’s why we are fundraising.  To raise some money and awareness for the sepsis trust to help train people so that others are not turned away at such a crucial time!

Bodhi is 4 now, he’s a smiley, happy and a loving little boy.  He is well but he has lots of struggles.  But he is here, he is our little brother and we love him so much  💙
