Story

Just giving donations to Marie Curie in lieu of flowers:

Andrea passed away peacefully on the 22nd June 2020. Andrea will be greatly missed and we hope you will give generously to Marie Curie in her memory. Andrea received wonderful support from Marie Curie, as you will see from below. The outbreak of Coronavirus and the restrictions stemming from that have had a major impact on how donations can be made in lieu of flowers for funerals. This means that instead of asking for any donations to be made to the funeral directors, or left at a memorial service (which will be unable to happen now), this Just Giving page has been set up to allow people to make donations if they so wish.

All donations will go directly to Marie Curie from Just Giving.

Thank you on behalf of Andrea and her family,

Paulo & Sue

Background

Andrea was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in Easter 2019. In August 2018 she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, had responded to treatment very well and had hoped to move forward to enjoy a long and healthy life. However, only a few months after finishing treatment, she found out that she had another primary cancer, which had clearly been growing for many years and was far more significant.  By the time it was diagnosed, this primary bowel cancer had spread, with secondary cancers shown in a large number of areas, including a large amount in the liver and peritoneum.
Andrea received support from both Velindre Cancer Care as well as Marie Curie Penarth, who worked together. She also had an operation at the Heath last September, to help.

Andrea received support from Marie Curie as soon as she received her terminal diagnosis. This included Marie Curie helping her write very detailed "Advance Care Plan" and "DNR" which put her mind at rest so she could enjoy the 2019 summer holidays with her family doing what her family enjoyed, including walking, cycling, kayaking and camping. This plan also proved very helpful in allowing Marie Curie to understand Andrea so they could support her in a manner appropriate to her, including talking things through with a dark sense of humour, and no fuss. These things are just as important as the medical side of things. This understanding was even more important during coronavirus restrictions.

Marie Curie were able to follow Andrea's recent journey and monitor and provide support when needed. Towards the end of her life they provided a lot of support, both in trying to assist with finding the right pain relief, and providing equipment to help her move around safely at home. This help allowed Andrea to be treated according to her wishes. Her family are very grateful for the support they received.  Later on, they were also able provide her with wonderful round the clock care at the hospice.  We would very much appreciate any level of donation you feel able to make to Marie Curie.  We wish you all happy and healthy lives in the future.

Our nurses, doctors, therapists and social workers provide expert care and support both to the people staying with us at the hospice, and in the local community. Each day at the hospice is special. By getting to know people as individuals, we help them do what is important to them whether thats getting out into the hospice garden to enjoy the views across the sea, having a beloved pet visit come to visit or sharing precious moments with their loved ones.We need to raise £6,660 per day to run the hospice, so every penny counts. Thank you for helping to make sure more people with a terminal illness in Cardiff and the Vale get the care and support they need. The care that Paul received was amazing. The only time he felt he could really be himself was in the hospice in the last few weeks of his life.-Pamela, whose brother Paul spent his last days with us
