As you know I still play rugby for London Irish Vets and only last week we found out that we’ve been honoured to be asked to play the Curtain Raiser match before the England vs Ireland Legends match at the home of Harlequins, the Stoop, on Friday 21st February. Fret not, I’m not asking you to endure watching me traipse, I mean sprint, around a rather large pitch, but I am asking for a little bit of support in the form of donations to the RFU Injured Players Foundation and the IRFU Charitable Trust.
The Legends match is made up of a team of former internationals, which includes amongst others Martin Corry, Jason Leonard, Andy Gomarsall, Shane Byrne, Mick Galway, Trevor Brenan and 40 other former Irish and English Internationals.
The matches are being played in memory of Stuart Mangan, who suffered a terrible spinal injury while playing rugby for Hammersmith and Fulham in 2008 and who tragically passed away the following year.
Stuart was only 24 and his injury and subsequent death greatly affected players at his club, but also the international rugby playing community and an idea that began between Stuart and Matt Hampson (England Under 20’s Prop while Stuart was in hospital), for an England vs. Ireland Legends Charity game, was later developed by Shane Byrne and Len Dineen of Ireland & Martin Corry and Jason Leonard of England, in to the now famous Legends Match.
Our matchkicks off at 6pm and the Legends at 7.45pm so if you want a real laugh then tickets can be bought through Ticketmaster http://www.englandirelandlegends.com/#!tickets/c1yws
Many thanks for your support
