Story

Short version: Your support will be doubled and save the lives of people with albinism who have skin cancer. I'm doing the Milton Keynes Festival of Running Half Marathon on Sunday 15th March to raise funds for Advantage Africa's Albinism Project in Uganda. Your donation will be doubled by two kind families and go directly towards urgently-needed, life-saving treatment for young people with albinism in Uganda who have skin cancer. It will ensure they receive the surgery and care they need and can look forward to a long and healthy life.

Long version: Why your donation is so urgently needed and how it will help some of the world's most vulnerable people. People with albinism lack the protective skin pigment melanin which makes them highly vulnerable to skin cancer. Advantage Africa works with our partner the Source of the Nile Union of Persons with Albinism (SNUPA) to prevent needless deaths from skin cancer by promoting sun avoidance and protection. However, as our skin clinics reach new areas, we often come across people with albinism with advanced skin cancer who require urgent surgery to save their lives. There are currently twelve such people, aged from 16 to 32, in need of immediate treatment and care, without which they face an uncertain future because there is no free cancer treatment in Uganda.

We started this campaign at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/beatskincancer2020 when two wonderful couples pledged to match all donations up to £6,300 in order to raise the £12,600 needed for all 12 people, and to support others requiring interventions to remove pre-cancerous lesions or provide palliative care. I really hope my MK Half Marathon will boost this appeal and help us get closer to our target. With your support and encouragement we can together help people with albinism to have a future to look forward to.

Thank you for your wonderful donation, and best wishes -

Andrew.
