The Hobble To The Sky Part II - The Journey Home

Andrew Blacker is raising money for East Anglian Air Ambulance

Hobble To The Sky · 10 June 2022

East Anglian Air Ambulance provides advanced critical care 24/7 to the most seriously ill and injured people in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire by air and road. Each tasking costs on average £4,250 and, with no regular government funding, we rely almost entirely on public support.

Story

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is a 365-day-a-year helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) covering Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk & Suffolk. We exist to save lives by delivering highly skilled doctors and critical care paramedics by air to seriously ill or injured people in the region. We do not receive regular direct government funding and the £15 million we need to raise this year comes directly from charitable donations. We are only kept airborne thanks to our incredible supporters. Thank you.

START

The event will start at 10.30am, Friday 4th November 2022, with a 1 mile stroll, from The Car Park, Landseer Park, Landseer Road, Ipswich (opposite Holbrook Road).

I have Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis 28 years after first diagnosis, and am driven to give back to the community where I can. As I can still just about hobble about, with two walking sticks and a splint (for drop foot), this is how I can best get involved, so I am going to hobble 300 miles over a period of 12-14 months (hopefully)!

At the start of this walk, I will have hobbled 700 miles, so this walk will also take me to 1000 miles overall.

I have been involved in two live actions of the EAAA during my career as a Police Officer, as the first officer at the scene, and have been impressed beyond belief by the speed and professionalism of everyone involved.

56 miles completed after a difficult winter weather period. I have hobbled on 50% of the days available since the start, and hope to increase this ratio significantly over the next few weeks.

As of 26/6, 117 miles completed.

THE WINTER BREAK -175 MILES

An extended weather break has kept me off the road for some time, and I am left with 125 Miles to do to complete the challenge.

THE RESTART

The restart of the hobble looks set for the morning of 31/01/2024. No fanfares or press, just get out of the car, hobble 1 mile and get back in the car!

THE ONGOING SAGA NEARLY 2/3 OF THE DISTANCE

I am now approaching the 2/3 milestone, as the weather, and opportunity to get out safely for a hobble improve.
