Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Our 6 year old son Elijah has ASD - Autism Spectrum Disorder, in particular delayed speech and language communication as well as struggling with social and emotional interaction. Elijah mainly communicates using Echolalia which is the repetition of learned phrases and noises that he has picked up from the programs and games he watches. He is in a mainstream school with an EHCP which gives him 1-2-1 support for his whole day. However he currently cannot include himself with the other children around him as he finds them too unpredictable and prefers to be alone or within the company of adults.
Elijah is a caring, sensitive boy and with the help of his Mummy and big sister, Jessica, we aim to give him the best possible start on his journey with ASD and help him understand the world around him.
We have been campaigning for change in an underfunded state school system that doesn’t have the resources or often the knowledge to implement suitable arrangements to support SEN children who are able to attend mainstream schools, with the right support. Elijah’s case is being pioneered in Parliament to advocate for change to help children in similar situations achieve better care and support in the future.
The Challenge
On the 1st of July 2023 I will be joining Team Autism and taking on the Jurassic Coast Challenge. I’ll be doing the 30km (18.6 miles) hike along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset to raise money and awareness for The National Autistic Society who’s help and advice has proved helpful to us.
