Once again, I'm heading into the sea on Boxing Day to raise money for excellent causes.

Half the money I raise will go to Cancer Research UK. I'm now 6 years in remission, and know that successful treatment of my cancer was made possible by research. Indeed every one of us will be close to someone who has benefited from this important work.

The other half will go to charities chosen by the Lions Club of Paignton. They support air ambulances, children's hospices and local hospitals - all excellent causes that need our donations.

So please flex the plastic and donate. In past years my friends and colleagues have been very generous; I hope they will be equally generous in 2012
