During the COVID-19 outbreak, St John is actively supporting ambulance services, hospitals and communities to protect life and health through this worrying and uncertain period.
In recent weeks, over 750 nationwide St John Ambulance volunteers including myself have offered to support the NHS cope with the COVID-19 outbreak. This includes – but is not limited to - the deployment of emergency ambulance crews, patient transport crews, and providing support to hospitals within A&E departments and wards.
The local events where you may have once seen us - or even needed our help - are no longer running, and instead, our main priority is now providing vital support to the NHS
Some of our volunteers have recently been deployed in London to help the London Ambulance Service respond to a record number of 999 calls, whilst a number of our volunteers have been undergoing further training in order to provide support to NHS hospital's in coming weeks and months.
But our support goes beyond a presence on the front line. A substantial amount of coordination and planning goes on behind the scenes to ensure the optimum use of our manpower, in addition to effective (and necessary) fundraising, and of course, the paramount task of protecting the welfare of our volunteers. As a charity, we are incredibly proud of what we do, and how we are able to help those most in need.
