Cycle for Buttony · 9 October 2022

A Bear Named Buttony is a Scottish Charity providing support throughout the UK to children and young people who have a stoma. We donate Buttony, a cuddly friend, who has a stoma to children through a network of paediatric stoma nurses and direct through our FaceBook page. For Young Adults with a stoma we donate a wash bag full of non medical items to help them adapt to life with a stoma. Thanks so much for considering supporting our work. Together we can raise awareness and banish the 'poo' taboo!

Story

Hello my name is Andy and I am a groundsman at Mount Kelly Prep School.

In July 2021 I was diagnosed with stage 2 bowel cancer. In December 2021 I underwent APR surgery as well as receiving a permanent stoma.

I returned to work in February this year and am now at a stage in my recovery that I was looking at setting myself a challenge to raise money for a good cause.

I came across a charity that supplies teddy bears with stomas for babies and children who have stomas. . The bears are adapted by volunteers who also sew the stoma bags.

The charity also has produced a children's book about buttony, and for teenagers and young adults there is a different pack to help.

After looking at the amazing work they do, I decided that I would try to raise money to see how many Buttony Bears  I could sponsor - each costing £30.

I have decided to set myself the challenge of cycling 300km on my exercise bike from the 3rd of November to the 3rd of December ( the date of my surgery last year) - this would mean a daily average of 30 mins which is the limit at the moment following the APR surgery.
