There has been a church building on the site of St James' Teignmouth, serving the local community, since the 12th century. The original church was consecrated a while later in 1268.

By the 19th century the old church had fallen into disrepair but under the guidance of Admiral Sir Edward Pellew (of Bitton House), the tower was restored and the nave rebuilt in its current unusual octagonal shape. The rebuilt church was rededicated on 11 September 1821.

The 200th anniversary is being celebrated with a Fun Day at St James on 11th September 2021. As part of those celebrations I will be taking part in the Annual Ride & Stride event to support Devon Historic Churches Trust who provide grant funding for the maintenance of historic churches across Devon, like St James, to help them to serve their communities both now and into the future.

Starting and/or ending at St James', I hope to visit some 6 churches in Teignmouth, Dawlish and beyond, striding around 10 miles in the process, and it would be really good if we could together raise some funds for this great cause.
