Story
'Uncle' Harry is fast approaching the ripe old age of 100 and is one, if not the oldest surviving Second World War Submariner. Many of us are aware of the sad attack on Harry back in 2017 but since then he has fought back with the support of the Submarine Service. Harry Melling joined the Royal Navy and his service between 1938 to 1945 was remarkable with him and other crew members of HMS Osiris serving in the Mediterranean where they played a role in the Allied invasion of Sicily and even travelled as far as Kenya. The Submarine went on to play an active role in Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily. As British and Canadian troops made amphibious landings, HMS Osiris acted to intercept Italian warships which were attempting to halt the invasion. Harry later went on to join HMS Tuna, the Submarine involved with the clandestine transportation of the famous Royal Marine 'Cockleshell Heroes' to France in order to carry out attacks on enemy shipping.
Harry is forever grateful to the serving and retired submariners who have supported him over the last few years and would like any donations for his 100th Birthday given to the newly formed Submarine Fund which is administered by the RNRMC and supports ALL Submariners (serving and veterans) and their families.
