The American Syringomyelia & Chiari Alliance Project (ASAP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1988 by Barbara and Don White after Barbara’s diagnosis with Chiari and syringomyelia. What began in their spare bedroom has grown tremendously, but our core focus—research, education and support—remains.

I became interested in Patients with Syringomyelia and Chiari malformations when I did my PhD in post traumatic syringomyelia in Sydney, Australia with Marcus Stoodley.  I have continued to be involved with biomedical engineers trying to understand the mechanics behind the problem.   As a consultant neurosurgeon at the UKs largest independent neurosciences trust, I am part of a specialist clinic and routinely operate on patients with this condition.  I have been always struck by the problems they have, and the symptoms they continue to have despite, what appears to be, successful treatment.  I hope you will help support this US charity in their work to help understand the problem and improve treatment for the future.  Many thanks
