BUPA Great North Run 2008 · 5 October 2008 ·

We're dedicated to beating blood cancer. We fund research and support those affected. Since 1960, we've invested over £500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. The day we beat blood cancer is now in sight and our researchers are determined to finish the job.

Story

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to have a look at my fundraising page.

As most of you will be aware I have entered the Great North Run, this is a joint effort in order to get me back in training and more importantly fundraising for a worthwhile cause. So here it is, I am running in aid of Leukaemia research a charity which is close to my heart.

I have no goal in terms of amount I want to raise, just as much as I can with all your help. Any donation you can spare will be greatly appreciated no matter how small, as we all know..... 'every little helps'.

Training has started and a number of 10ks have been completed, some more successful than the others. I am hoping to run it in under 2 hours.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Leukaemia Research will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

Updates

The Great North Run is going to be shown live on BBC1 next Sunday morning. With the actual race starting about 10.30

Watch out for my number 11499.

I will be running beside Captain America, so it may be more easy to spot him.

Thursday 2nd Oct - Well the final warm up run has been completed and it is 100% rest until Sunday. Not sure if I will manage to do that, is there such a thing as an addiction to running...

Sunday 28th Sept - Cannot believe that this time next week the race will be over. The last hard weekend of training is now over with a 10 and 8 mile run completed at leisurely pace to ensure that I do not tweak anything. There will be a few easy runs this week but nothing to taxing. For all those that have kindly donated your support has been much appreciated and will act as that little bit of motivation that I need when the pain creeps in next Sunday.

Monday 22nd Sept - Well now less than two weeks until the run, so the hard miles are over with and the speed work (yep got to find the 2nd gear) is back on the go. I have managed to get back from Delhi, without any shrapnel or Delhi belly, so the training has been going well. Although being on the treadmill at 2.30am UK time, is not what my body was built for. Well the final member of Team Samways has been announced as Mike Munro. Mike will be watching my food and drink intake over the next few weeks, by this I mean he will drink all my wine and eat the food I used to enjoy whilst living with me.

Saturday 13th Sept - Whooo hooo - injury free. First week of full training for about 6 weeks (35 miles in the week). It is now time to push in those extra miles, including a run tonight of all things prior to my flight to India. Yep I am going away again for humidity training. Hoping that a little bit of Delhi belly may shift the last few pounds so that I am at my fighting weight for next month. The latest member of Team Samways will be joining next week on the return from India, to push me through my last few weeks.

Monday 25th Aug - With a month to go it is time to begin the humidity train. I am told that the greats always head for some warm weather before the run to help with there training, so I am off to Portugal. There has been accusations that this will involve just golf and drinks, but I promise you all the trainers are packed  for some hard running.
