Story
Last year I was unfortunately diagnosed with bowel cancer. Like most people faced with a cancer diagnosis I was in shock. However, after talking with my family we prepared ourselves for what might come next. After numerous tests and visits to the hospital the surgeon recommended an operation to remove the tumor. She was confident that the operation would be a success and she in turn made me feel I was in excellent hands. Her name was Dr Claire Carden and based on discussion with the hospital staff she was one of the best, if not the best, surgeon in the country. Instilled with confidence I felt very positive.
I am pleased to say the operation was a huge success and I was released from hospital very quickly into the loving arms of family and friends. Four weeks later I met with the Oncologist Dr Ian Sanders and he recommended I go through a series of chemotherapy sessions to effectively mop up the residual cancer cells. In early February 2025, after 6 months of chemo, I was given the all clear.
Looking back now it seems like a bad dream, but what resonated with me was the dedication and support of all the staff I met at Ninewells Hospital and Perth Royal Infirmary Hospital. Words cannot describe the warmth and support I received, and the dedication of everyone I met. I want to give back in some way, and so I am asking my family, friends, and colleagues to support me one more time. In August 2025, in my 70th year, I have challenged myself to take on the Rob Roy Mighty Hike ( 15.3 miles) to help raise money for people living with cancer. I'd be so grateful if you could help me reach my target, with all money raised going to Macmillan Cancer Support. Your kind donation will help provide people living with cancer and their families essential medical, practical, and emotional support. There are currently 3 million people living with cancer in the UK today. It's Macmillan's goal to be there for everyone from the moment of diagnosis, but they can't do this without the support from people like you.
I am a testament that when needed, the cancer support people were there for ME.
Thank you
Andrew
