Very sadly we lost Henry (Sheryll's Dad) at the end of last year. He was diagnosed with a musculoskeletal cancer 18 months ago. The diagnosis was a shock to all. Despite surgery and chemotherapy he succumbed to the illness on the 21st November 2013. Typically of Henry, his illness was borne with courage despite the obvious pain and functional restriction the cancer caused. He continued to work until the last few weeks, when he was physically unable to do so. During the last few weeks he spent a number of periods in the hospital, but his wish was always to be at home with his family.
In the latter stages of Henry's illness the support of the Marie Curie nurses was invaluable in acheiving his wish of dying at home. As a medical professional myself, I don't think I fully understood the role of this group of carers. It was only having experienced their work first hand that I feel I truly understand the role they play. In particular, allowing people like Henry to die at home with the comfort of their family around them.
It is with this in mind that I am running the Edinburgh Marathon for Marie Curie in recognition and thanks for the fantastic work they do.
Please consider contributing to my JustGiving page in Memory of Henry and to raise some well deserved funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
