Story
Caring partner, loving mother.
Kelly passed away on the 3rd September 2011 after a battle with metastatic breast cancer aged 29. On the 3rd September 2012 I'm going to be climbing the UK's highest peaks in memory of her. I was her fiance and the father to our son, Ruaridh. Who is now seven.
The "Scottish 4000's" are a grouping of the UK's highest hills, all attaining a height of at least 4000ft. There are nine of them. Five of these peaks are within the Cairngorms National Park, the other four are in Glen Nevis.
96 miles by bike, 37 miles on foot and 5,216 metres of height gain.
The twists:
No motorised transport from the start of the first hill to the end of the last. I'll be cycling between Aviemore and Fort William.
Oh, and I aim to do it in 3 days.
Day one: Leave car at the Cairn Gorm ski centre sharp in the morning, aiming to be up Cairn Gorm by sunrise. Over the plateau and a climb up to Ben Macdui, Britains second tallest mountain. Down hill through the Lairig Ghru before reascending towards Cairn Toul and hill number three. Then a lengthy walk towards Braeriach taking in Sgor an Lochan Uaine on the way. That night will most likely be spent bivvying back in the Lairig Ghru.
Day two. Cycling between Aviemore and Fort William. Will bivvy below Aonach Beag.
Day three. Climb up towards Aonach Beag then over to Aonach Mor before a steep descent then reascent towards Carn mor Dearg followed by a walk over the arete to Ben Nevis. Decending from there back to my bike and a sleep before cycling back to Aviemore for my car the next day!
