We help blind veterans to discover a life beyond sight loss

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Andy and Wayne are two friends that will be running the London Marathon 23rd April 2023, in aid of Blind Veterans UK.

Andy is a member of Blind Veterans UK formally St. Duntsans. In 2011 Andy was medically discharged from the Army after nearly 20 years service with sight loss. That same year Andy went to the Brighton centre for some rehabilitation, and shown skills to help deal with his new found life. Andy went to the centre in a very dark and emotional place, after a few visits to the centre and some positive encouragement from family and friends the cloud started to lift. In 2017 Andy returned to running something he lost confidence with.
Andy has little to no peripheral vision which makes running difficult as he can not see Kerbs, road signs, bottles on the floor etc.. this also causes problems with depth perception.
Andy was challenged by family and friends to run 100 miles in a month, he then went on to run over 1,200 miles that year and to date has ran over 8,500 miles all in aid of Blind Veterans UK. This will be Andy's 9th London marathon. Andy will have completed over 10,000 miles since 2017.

Wayne is a family friend and the son of an retired Para. Wayne has been guiding Andy for a number of runs over the past few years and together will run Wayne's 4th London Marathon. Wayne said that his first Marathon  London's  40th anniversary  which was in covid was the hardest thing he had ever done. 12 months later Wayne was at the start line in London to do his second, Wayne has stepped up to the plate once more and is preparing to guide Andy once again,  Wayne is not only looking forward to meeting other Blind Veterans he has made friends with but also the crowds that lift you as you run.

Some examples that can make a difference:

Liquid indicator from £12.00 = This allows the individual make a drink without over filling the cup/glass.

White Cane from £13.00 = This allows the individual to walk safely in the streets.

Talking Watch from £15.00 = Audible voice telling the time.

Thank you for reading Andy and Wayne.
