Story
A BIKER from Leyland is revving up for a hot charity challenge.
Andrew Barnes, of Northgate, will be adding a little spice to his life by joining the India Motorcycle Challenge.
The father-of-three will ride around 1,300km across north India on a classic Royal Enfield 500cc Bullet to boost funds for The Children's Trust.(Charity Registration No 288018).
The charity offers expert help to children with profound disabilities and complex medical conditions and aims to help them achieve as much independence and the best quality of life possible.
Andrew, 41, will be in a team of bikers, all riding the same classic machine, travelling around the foothills of the Himalayas and to the River Ganges.
He said: "We fly out to India on October 2. There's 14 people in the group.
"It's an organised trip and we have a support vehicle and an itinerary that we must follow." Andrew will spend two nights of the nine day trip camping and the remainder in a hotel or hostel. He said: "A friend of mine and I read in a motorcycle magazine about this Indian Motorcycle Challenge so I thought I'd do it. "I have been riding for 26 years. I have never been out of the UK on a bike, but I have been all over the UK from Devon to Scotland on it. "This is my first time in India. I like curries, so I should be okay!" Although Andrew now rides a Triumph Trident 900 1998 model, he once owned a Royal Enfield 350cc Bullet after winning it in a £1 raffle back in 1996 and his first bike was a Royal Enfield Crusader 1963 model. Andrew said: "It's going to bring back a lot of memories for me." All of the bikers taking part will be supplied with the motorcycle, which will be serviced every evening, after arriving in Amritsar in India from Delhi. He needs to raise a minimum of £2,850 sponsorship for the trip, having already contributed £299. This will cover the £1,684 tour costs and ensure at least £1,465 sponsorship goes to The Children's Trust, but he is hoping to exceed this amount. The money raised will help fund the building of two purpose designed houses for the pupils of St Margaret's School, many of whom are unable to live at home because of their complex health needs. n Anyone wishing to sponsor Andrew can call 01772 467 011 or text/call 07903 212886.
