CITY TO SUMMIT · 2 July 2017

Dystonia UK is the only UK wide organisation driven to ensure that the 100,000 people across the country with dystonia have access to crucial information support and essential treatment. We exist to give hope and support to those living with Dystonia creating UK and worldwide awareness.

Story

My nephew Kryan Harland, now age 10, first became ill in March 2016 and was quickly reduced to needing a wheelchair. After many weeks in Newcastle RVI he was finally diagnosed with Dystonia.

Dystonia is a neurological condition, causing involuntary muscle spasms which forces the body into disabling positions..... It is a little known condition, but affects 70,000 people in the UK.

Kyran is an amazing young man and he has refused to let his illness get him down. In fact, his lovely nature and good humour is what has kept his Mum and Dad (Michael and Paula) sane and able to cope with the day to day problems that Dystonia has forced upon them.

Kyran is currently waiting to hear from London's St Thomas' Hospital to confirm if he is suitable for Deep Brain Stimulation; this is a procedure in which an electronic device is implanted into the brain (described as a brain pacemaker), which can change the brain activity in a controlled manner, to suppress the involuntary muscle spasms.

I am hoping to raise £1,000.00 for The Dystonia Society charity, on behalf of Kyran, by taking part in the City to Summit event on 2nd July 2017 - which is my 50th birthday!!

The event starts in Edinburgh and is ................. a half marathon road run, followed by a 180km bike ride, finishing with a full marathon off-road run on Ben Nevis.

This is the biggest challenge I have ever undertaken and I hope that you are able to support me, by raising funds for The Dystonia Society, to help those affected by Dystonia.

Thank you.
