Kawasaki disease is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in the UK and the western world. It's time we changed that. We have an enormous task to do. But we are going to do it. TOGETHER we will. Join us and help us protect tiny hearts. You can make a difference. Awareness of this often pernicious disease is currently poor. Slow diagnosis and delayed treatment of Kawasaki Disease can cause serious, life-long health issues. Children affected by Kawasaki Disease have excellent chances of a good recovery with timely diagnosis and the correct treatment. At Societi we know that recognising Kawasaki Disease early is THE transformational opportunity to prevent what can be devastating effects from Kawasaki Disease. Kawasaki Disease has lots of symptoms in common with other childhood illnesses so it is often misdiagnosed - this means lifelong heart damage for too many children. Each year in the UK there are more cases of Kawasaki Disease than bacterial meningitis! Everyone would spot meningitis and know what to do, because of brilliant awareness raising work by MRT. We need everyone to recognise Kawasaki Disease too.

Story

Most of you that know me, know that I’m one of those mad sort that do marathons for fun.  I have never run for sponsorship before, but this year is different. I’m asking you to dig deep or at least spare a few pounds.

This year I’m upping the anti! I plan to complete two pretty big challenges to raise much needed funds and awareness for Societi, the UK Kawasaki Foundation. A charity as some of you will be very aware has become a big part of our lives.

You may not have heard of Kawasaki Disease. We hadn’t until six months ago when Stanley our little boy suddenly got very very sick. Kawasaki Disease is an inflammatory process that can affect almost every system in the body. If not treated it works its way through the body until it reaches the coronary artery causing life long irreparable damage. Stanley now lives with two giant aneurisms on his coronary artery and endures daily injections, medication and weekly hospital visits. Despite all of this he is the most incredible happy and beautiful little boy that loves life. He is my inspiration and will be my motivation.

This year I plan to break a WORLD RECORD!! And race against a horse in a gruelling 22 mile off road race, and try to win.

In April I will be running the London Marathon for the sixth time. But this year it will be tougher as I will aim to break a World Record as the fastest ever marathon runner dressed as MR POTATO HEAD.

In June I will then be going to Wales to take part in a 22 mile off road race against a horse! Yes that’s right I will aim to beat a horse over 22 miles something that in 30 plus years has only ever been achieved twice!!! So wish me luck. This challenge is a little ambitious given the odds but I’ll do my best and I will have fun trying.

The cause of Kawasaki Disease is unknown, however research is taking place. The big issue is very little funds are made available to raise awareness and fund research into Kawasaki Disease. Cases are doubling and more and more children are getting this horrible disease.

It would mean the world to me and my family if you could join us in supporting this charity by sparing a few pounds, thank you.

We never knew anything about Kawasaki Disease. The symptoms are similar to other childhood illnesses please be aware of the signs:

- Temperature

- Sore mouth

- Cracked lips

- Red tongue

- Skin rash

- Swollen glands
