Story
My mum, Jeannie, died from bowel cancer on 10th January 2019 at Cynthia Spencer hospice. For 10 months of mum's illness, we cared for mum at home, as she preferred. However in December 2019 her illness really took hold and mum began to deteriorate rapidly and we were unable to cope or make her comfortable at home. Mum was admitted into Cynthia Spencer on Christmas eve of 2018 It was a great relief to see mum having the care she needed and they made her as comfortable as they possibly could. When you enter Cynthia Spencer hospice, you become part of a larger family, you are no longer alone. I like it to being wrapped in a comfort blanket. We felt safe, cared for and most of all, peaceful. The staff understood our situation. They were wonderful, helpful, kind and compassionate, nothing was ever too much trouble for them. I cannot thank them enough.
My mum was fortunate to be allocated a bed in Cynthia Spencer, there are only a certain amount of beds, and staff, available at any one time. Unless money is raised to fund more beds and staff there will be many more people who will not be as fortunate as my mum and receive the care they need.
The money I raise from this event will help make a small difference for people needing end of life support and palliative care.
