Story
At some stage in our lives we will all be affected by a life-limiting illness even if it hasn't touched us or our loved ones yet. I was a co-carer for my mother who had dementia for over ten years. For the last 4 years of her life she needed 24 hour care. She didn't know who we were, she couldn't walk, talk or do anything for herself. It took 5 hours every day just to feed her. Thanks to the determination and grit of my father, our unconditional love for her and a wonderful team of carers, we were able to look after her at home until her last breath. They visited us for half an hour every morning and evening - without their help we couldn't have managed. The Hospice of St Francis is a charity that provides free, expert care for people living with life-limiting illnesses in West Herts and South Bucks, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or socio-economic background. They also support their families, carers and those close to them. I know from experience how invaluable this is.
A multi-disciplinary team offers support from diagnosis and care is tailored to each individual patient’s needs, helping them to improve and maintain their quality of life. Care is provided in a patient’s home, at their health and wellbeing Spring Centre hub or in one of their 14 Hospice beds.
The team also works closely with local hospitals and nursing homes to support patients and share best practice.
They rely on voluntary donations from our local community to raise 80% of over £5 million they need annually to fund their free care.
