Story
I first came across James' Place back in 2016 when I raced against Harry (brother of James) and his team across the Atlantic. Since having my own mental health struggles, I have committed to helping men who need support in getting through their toughest times.
At James' Place, our mission is to stop men dying by suicide. Yet, in the UK suicide is still the single leading cause of death of men under 50. We believe that no man should face a suicidal crisis alone. James' Place provides free, professional therapy for men in suicidal crisis to help them find hope for the future.
The Need
Suicide is a major public health issue and a tragedy which touches families and communities across the UK. Last year 4,500 men died by suicide, making it the leading cause of death for men under the age of 50. Three quarters of those who die by suicide are men.The men we see at James’ Place are experiencing an acute suicidal crisis, which is often driven by issues like financial problems, relationship breakdown, debt and job loss. Evidence from previous recessions shows clear rises in suicide rates so, recognising the current pressures of economic uncertainty, we are even more determined to urgently reach more men in crisis.
How we help
We offer men in crisis a life-saving treatment, which is free and quick to access. It is a specially formulated and proven clinical intervention, delivered at our centres by trained professional therapists in a welcoming and safe environment. We have to date supported more than 1,250 men experiencing suicidal crisis and delivered over 5,300 therapy sessions across our two centres.
Our Impact
The treatment that we give men in crisis is proven to work. Rigorous and ongoing evaluation, carried out independently by Liverpool John Moores University, shows that the James’ Place treatment model considerably reduces suicidality in men. On average men who attended James’ Place Liverpool between 2018-2021 for therapy experienced a clinically signi昀cant improvement in their mental wellbeing and a reduction in their levels of psychological distress. The evaluation proves that men who receive our service experience life changing outcomes.
