Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike 2023 - half marathon · 10 September 2023 ·
I along with other members of my family, will be taking part in the Macmillan Mighty Hike along the Jurassic Coast in memory of my brother.
In December last year, my brother (61) was informed that the recurrent pneumonia he has been struggling to shake off had a more sinister cause and he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. Fast forward eight months of treatment, infections, hospital stays, precious time as a family, decreasing health and diminishing hope and, at the beginning of July, he was told that there was nothing more that could be done. We said our goodbyes in August.
As anyone who has experienced something like this will know, the feeling of helplessness is overwhelming and you quickly realise that the nurses, carers and staff who work with terminally ill cancer patients are nothing other than angels. People like the Macmillan nurses offer patients and their families information, guidance, support and kindness at their darkest moments and the service they provide is beyond anything that money can buy.
For this reason, a number of my family members and I will be raising money by completing the Macmillan Mighty Hike along the Jurassic Coast. This 13-mile walk is described as ‘hilly’ (a total elevation of 2088ft) with big climbs and descents down to the sea. So, for someone who lives in the Fens of Lincolnshire, it will be quite a challenge! It starts in Weymouth and goes along the coastal path to West Lulworth
We hope to raise as much money as possible for Macmillan Cancer Support to help them continue the invaluable work that they do. Whilst it won’t make my brother better or change his diagnosis, it will create something positive out of a heart-breaking situation.
I would be incredibly grateful for your support and any donations, no matter how big or small.
