We visit people in detention at Gatwick to befriend and support them while detained

Story

Gatwick Detainee Welfare Group is a small charity that makes a big difference to people held in immigration detention at Gatwick and after detention too.  For over 25 years GDWG visitors have been offering friendship to strangers, bearing witness to the realities of detention and making weekly visits to people who would otherwise be isolated.

People in immigration detention are held indefinitely and the uncertainty of how long they will be detained can have a terrible impact on their mental and physical health. The stories of people who have been detained are shared in four volumes of 'Refugee Tales' published by Comma Press and every year on a long walk the stories are shared in evening events.

This will be my fifth Refugee Tales walk, and this year I am walking from Merstham to Winchester. I'll be leading a group, part of the 120 people who have signed up to walk in solidarity with refugees. This is the first time I have asked for fundraising support. I'm doing so today because this is a tough time for small charities, especially those who support refugees.

Please show your support for those whose plight is frequently invisible and give generously to GDWG and Refugee Tales.

Our mission is to improve the welfare of people held in detention by offering friendship and support and advocating for fair treatment. We do this by visiting individuals, as well as working with other organisations to raise awareness of the call for a 28 day time limit to detention.
