Inca Trail Sponsored Trek · 28 November 2007

We are a small, lively, totally voluntary charity offering food, clothes, shelter, education, health, and fun to the children from extreme poverty who live in our refuge in the desert shanty towns, where we also undertake practical initiatives with the local communities. www.projectperu.org.uk

Story

Hey beautiful generous people

I am about to embark on an exciting adventure into Peru volunteering for a wonderfully dedicated charity called Project Peru. Manned purely by volunteers.Project Peru is totally reliant on donations to provide support and aid for some 30 children in the refuge based in Zapallal on the outskirts of Lima. Its aims are to give financial, educational and material support to children and families, women and the elderly in need, providing food and shelter for many displaced and marginalised people. Project Peru encourages voluntary effort, which is where I come in, to improve self-sufficiency, education and raise conscious awareness towards the developmental issues in a general Latin American context in the uk.

Can you believe that over 50% of Peruvians live in poverty and 25% in extreme poverty. Those are devastating numbers. The slums in which I will be volunteering 'house' 66,000 Peruvians and for 23 years have had no running water  and barely no access to healthcare or sanitation. I will be walking there each morning from the refuge to help in the soup kitchen which Project Peru has set up to help nourish the victims of this devastating situation.
After a few months I will go high into the mountains, into the breathtaking cold where the children sleep at night, and through and innovative and creative approach, give daily educational classes, teaching English, music and arts to the children who cannot reach the nearest school, which is located 2 1/2 hours away from their villages, to provide immediate warmth and respite not just from the cold. To highlight conditions where your breath is highlighted in the air and where lone children can be found sleeping with only the cold for company, its amazing what you can do with a hug in the cold.
Finally I will spend the rest of my 7 months teaching the children English in the refuge, a mixture of English language and general education to help get the disadvantaged children up to their supposed school level.
Basically I am calling on each and every one of you to help the Peruvian people, especially the children, whose tears cannot be heard in our photographs, that greatly benefit from conscious effort and generous donations. I will be fortunate to see the benefits from every pound donated when I spend time there next year so please help us RAISE a little smile on their faces. You count and they count. And with the current exchange rate small change for you is a very big change for them. Help us exchange tears for smiles.

I am going to trek the Inca Trail so I would like you all to DIG DEEP and sponsor me online, as much as you possibly can and every penny goes straight to the people of Peru. Its a 4 day trek up to a staggering 14,000 feet. Its going to be an incredible feat for me using massive determination and the whole thing will be incredibly hard-work so please show me your support.
Thank you so much for visiting my fundraising page.
