My name is Annie Jones and I have the privilege of working at Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff as an Oncology Specialist Nurse supporting patients who have an Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer (UGI).
UGI cancer is a malignancy which affects the upper part of the digestive system including the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver and gallbladder.
Over 20,000 people are diagnosed with UGI cancers each year in the UK. Wales has one of the highest incidences of some of these cancers with more than 1300 people affected each year. These cancers are among the most difficult to detect, diagnose and treat, as patients are often diagnosed late.
Being diagnosed and dealing with the effects of cancer can be a traumatic time for patients, family members and friends. It is an honour for me to work within the team of Specialist Nurses providing the highest level of holistic and supportive care when it is needed most.
I have been truly inspired by the wonderful patients, family and friends, which I meet on a daily basis. That is why I have signed up to this incredible challenge, cycling 600km. This is nothing compared to the challenges our patients have to face day after day.
I have seen at first hand, the amazing opportunities that Fundraising offers to our Specialist Nurses, allowing us to support patients and their families. It is Velindre's aim that ALL patients have access to a named Specialist Nurse and it is with great pleasure that I can tell you that all the money raised from this cycling event will be going towards the LEADING LIGHTS APPEAL which is for Velindre's very own "ANGELS". So, here's to more Specialist Nurses!!!! THANK YOU.
