Despite ME/CFS being an illness so severe that it has been found to cause a poorer quality of life than any major illness including cancer, its sufferers continue to be disbelieved, shamed and abandoned by doctors, friends and family. It is an illness that affects every major bodily system including the heart, nervous system, immune system and the production of energy. These patients are poorly served by contemporary medicine and die from heart failure and commit suicide in greater numbers and at far younger ages than the general population.

I myself do not have ME, however I have witnessed both those struggling with the illness and the negative opinions expressed by others. My partner has struggled since she got meningitis as a teenager and gradually her symptoms developed into eventually being diagnosed with ME. She is now 34 and struggles on a daily basis to follow her dreams. She is currently doing a doctorate in psychology which uses almost every morsel of energy she has. One thing that is clear is that it is a highly misunderstood illness and as such is massively overlooked from financial support for research. I would very much like the chance to help to allow further research into ME/CFS by doing something quite amazing in the London marathon.
