Ant's Virtual Everesting Attempt · 12 April 2020

NHS Charities Together and its members across the UK are hugely grateful for the support received from so many since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Story

On a scale of stupid things I’ve attempted…

Where one is trying to make a cookie dough loaf filled with oreos and marshmallows (tried this yesterday… it almost worked…)

And ten is probably the ride along the 100 mile South Downs Way on the shortest day of the year… During probably one of the wettest winters…

I think this next one scores an 11. 😂

Everesting.

Climbing Everest probably ain’t going to happen for me with zero climbing skills (maybe one day 🤷🏼‍♂️).

But what I can attempt is cycling the height of Everest in one sitting.

It involves finding a hill, riding up and down continuously until you hit the magic number of 8,848 metres (just over 29,000 feet)

It’s been something at the back of my mind for a while…

And considering there are no events right now to sooth my competitive itch, I figured why not now.

Obviously, outdoors (social isolation/distancing etc) is out of the question.

As a result…

Next Sunday (12th April) I will be riding on my turbo trainer on Zwift completing 8.5 reps of Alpe Du Zwift (the computerised version of Alpe D’Huez).

I’ll be kicking off at silly o’clock (I’m estimating around 6am).

It will take up a large portion of the day with each repetition taking around 60-75 minutes, so I’m looking at around 10-12 hours.

Now I’m not totally doing it for “fun” (maybe type 2 fun).

I’m doing it to raise money for charity too.

Clearly, we are on a tight timescale.

But the world as we know it is rapidly changing and I want to do what I can to help.

Of major concern is the future of the NHS, estimates are that it will very soon become overwhelmed by the recent coronavirus outbreak.

Any money in my mind will help ease this pressure and that is why I’ll be raising money for the NHS Charities Together.
