Hello, my name is Antonia & here's my story of how it all began, take afew moments to read..
..I'll never forget 4th February 2014 where I sat alone between a curtain and 2 consultants in a hospital bed where they broke the news.. ''90% chance you have blood cancer'' everything after the word cancer remains a blurr..
20 years old with my whole life ahead of me, balancing life between hospital appointments and organised activities organised by Teenage Cancer Trust.
How it all begun:
I suffered from a dry cough for a long period of time, was suffering from night sweats that I've never experienced before, back and forth to the doctors questioning my symptoms, got taken to hospital 26th November 2013, an X-ray was taken of my chest and a 'shadow' was found! I was discharged with a viral infection and the 'shadow' was 'probably just the angle the X-ray was taken'!
I continued my normal busy life, working two jobs (one volunteering) making the very little free time I had for family.. Christmas came round very quickly and day by day I felt worse and worse, hot and cold flushes, feeling weak and tired, coughing rapidly I ignored the symptoms because hospital pretty much told me everything was fine.
Christmas was done..
Time went by and nothing seemed to improve, I took a few days off just to visit the doctors and rest hoping I'd get better. On 1st February I was due back at work. My colleagues asked me how I felt, I said I felt fine but deep down in side I felt really weak with hot and cold flushes. Continued my day as normal, stacking shelves and serving customers.
As the day went on I suddenly felt really bad, so I decided to go to the toilet and get off the shop floor. The next thing I know I was sat in the office with two paramedics and my manager.. I'd fainted!
I was taken to the nearest hospital and was hospitalized for 2 weeks.. My hospital experience was all over the place, I met some really incredible people, got looked after by very skilled and experienced people, received great help and support from family and friends and now I think its time to give something back!
Teenage Cancer Trust supported me in so many different ways since my diagnoses. They provide specialist units where Teenagers and Young Adults like myself can receive treatment, University College London Hospital is where I'm currently receiving Chemotherapy. They have games rooms, activity clubs where you can meet and make friends with other patients of different ages, different activity coordinators that help you to express yourself through art, music or even just to have a chat. I've also received a numerous amount of complementary therapy offered for myself and my family.
Teenage Cancer Trust has helped me come to terms with my illness, and helped me to live life as normal as possible whist undergoing treatment. I've been given the chance to go to a football match live in Wembley Stadium, Met Ed Shereen and seen him perform live at the Royal Albert Hall! I've had the opportunity to meet other cancer patients and share our stories and illness.
I would like to thank the charity for everything they have done and are continuing to do for me. I would also like to make people more aware of the different symptoms. My symptoms consisted of a cough for long period of time, night sweats that I'd never experienced before, a noticeable amount of unexplained weight loss, hot and cold flushes and feeling tired all the time.
Teenage Cancer Trust gives teenagers and young adults the chance to continue to do things regular teenagers do on a day to day basis....
Don't let cancer be the chance a teenager misses out on a normal teenage life, fulfilling dreams of young people.. Donate today to give a young person a chance to do something they've never done before!
Thank you, Much Love <3 X
