5,000 miles and 5,000 pounds for Prostate Cancer UK

James Morley is raising money for PROSTATE CANCER UK

5,000 miles and £5,000 · 5 February 2013

Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition - to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer.

Story

In June 2011 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Getting back on my bike has been one of the best things to come out of this, not least because I went into the operation that November the fittest I had been in probably 20 years! I wanted to do something to help others and make sure that they are as lucky as I have been so I set myself a challenge whilst also fulfilling a lifetime’s ambition – cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats. So from January to July I rode about 500 miles per month, then topped it off with 1,500 miles in August!

My experience also inspired me to create a new, free-to-use fundraising platform aimed at anyone and everyone who wants make the things they do in life just that bit more valuable, A Penny Per Mile. I tested the concept on my 2013 ride, in the process reaching the £5,000 target.
