Story
I am pleased to report that the team from my boarding house at school all successfully completed our cycle ride from Lands End to Downe House, near Newbury, a distance of over 260 miles on 11th July. It was an amazing experience as we had to battle through the pouring rain, punctures, worn breaks and long hill climbs but the team had great spirit and we were successful in our goal. The picture at the top of the page is the team at the finish!!
The Sparkes Home Sri Lanka houses 40 girls and is situated in the village of Kallar, south of Batticaloa, Pamal area, on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The girls are aged from 6 years upwards and are either victims of the 2004 tsunami, victims of the recent civil war or from families who are so poor they cannot afford to keep their children. The home is run and administered by the Methodist church which donated the land to build the home in 2005 and money was raised by the Sparkes family and their friends. The home is one of many administered by the Methodist church but it welcomes all denominations.
The girls all attend the local school which is within walking distance. Once they have completed their education it is the ambition to make sure they have the means to earn their own living before they leave the home. In the home they provide extra English tuition and have provided some computers and sewing machines. They are currently planning a scholarship fund for university education.
