So what is domestic abuse? 

It is a gendered crime which is deeply rooted in the societal inequality between men and women. It is a form of gender-based violence, violence “directed against a woman because she is a women or that affects disproportionately.” (CEDAW, 1992).

Domestic abuse in England and Wales facts…

- Domestic abuse is a gendered crime – 1.6 million women experienced abuse in the year ending March 2019
- Three women a fortnight are killed by their male partner or former partner
- According to the Home Office, domestic abuse costs society £66bn per year



Survivors are at increased risk during lockdown.

Although Covid-19 does not cause domestic abuse, over two-thirds of survivors responding to a Women’s Aid survey in April 2020 indicated that domestic abuse had escalated since Covid-19. In the first two weeks of lockdown there was a 41% increase in users who used the Live Chat service on their website.
