The greatest form of charity is to give it towards a cause which is ongoing (جارية), as this helps you not just in this life, but in the afterlife also; as stated in many Prophetic Traditions  

This can be done in many ways, one of the most beautiful and effective ways is to give towards students who are studying sacred knowledge. And the reason for this is because knowledge itself never dies.

Even a penny can go such a long way, and that will help the student, subsequently when the student preaches or passes on that knowledge, then for each person he delivers it to, YOU will - in turn - get the reward.
