The Marathon des Sables is a multi stage 159 mile race in the Sahara Desert described by the Discovery Channel as "the toughest foot race on earth". The longest single stage is about 50 miles. Competitors have to carry their own food and equipment and given a ration one and a half litres of water about every ten kilometers.

I have wanted to enter it for bout 30 years, it is hot and the scenery beautiful. I thought I had better do it while my joints stand a chance of coping.
