CMV or Cytomegalovirus is a common virus that can infect people of all ages. Most healthy adults and children who become infected will have no signs or symptoms and no long term effects from CMV. However, CMV can pose serious problems to unborn babies if a woman catches it during pregnancy. In fact congenital CMV (when the infection is passed from mother to baby across the placenta) is one of the most major causes of childhood disability.
At a routine scan during my wife’s second pregnancy the doctors came across some abnormalities. My wife underwent tests and not long after we received the devastating news that she can contracted Congenital CMV. Something we had never heard of.
Two months of fear and uncertainty passed untill the 15th of February 2017 when our son, Kray-James Smith was born.
Fast forward to today and our beautiful boy is 5, doing well at Milestones school, smiling and laughing where ever he goes with who ever he meets.
These are the problems that Kray fights everyday, all caused by or stemmed from CMV.
