Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. These serious mental illnesses ruin and, too often, take lives. Our Helpline is available online or by phone for anyone suffering, as well as their family and friends.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

About the expedition:

In summer I will be setting out on an 'extreme minimalist' cycling expedition around Europe, it will take me more than 4,000 miles, climb 138,000ft, and across 15 countries, with no support crew. More details are on the website.

To minimise weight and bulk I'll be carrying hardly any clothing and to make that possible I’ll be staying at naturist and clothing optional clubs and resorts along the route. There are so many to choose from it's possible to link the journey together between them.

About me, my experiences, and why I chose BEAT:

I’ll be raising money for BEAT, the UKs eating disorder charity because of my personal experience and incorporating naturism because it helped me.

Over the years I’ve been very body conscious and dissatisfied with my appearance; looking back and reflecting on photographs at times I’ve been very thin but often viewed myself through a different negative lens.

In 2015 I tried a naturist holiday in France and since then other activities, along the way I’ve advocated the lifestyle, promoted options online and told friends and colleagues about the benefits.

I hope that coverage of the trip along with the growing number of articles and resources on the website (www.asitiz.com) will inspire more people to go to events and to try holidays, I think it can help people suffering from body image issues and generally the public for leisure with added mental health benefits.

There is such a diverse range of sports activities and culture events to try, locally and abroad, and the people who are involved are non judgemental, relaxed, friendly and easy going.

Recent Research:

Recently Goldsmiths university conducted the first quantitative research to prove that social nudity improves our personal body image and happiness.

There are a lot of people writing and talking about it like pro triathlete Sarah Bonham Carter, she wrote an article recently, also on the website.

Why its important to me:

This means a lot to me for so many reasons; I want to raise awareness about the benefits of naturism as it has helped me, I hope it can help other people as the Golsmiths research suggests and I love cycling! On the scale of 1-10 in terms of life challenges this is pretty big so a 10 - its a long time, a big distance and there are a lot of hills to climb!

If anyone wants to chat or thinks they might be able to help out in another way please let me know.

Please wish me luck!
