Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

37 runners from the University of Lincoln’s athletics club will be taking on the Lincoln 10k and a 24 hour spinathon to raise money and awareness for the Huntington’s Disease Association. Our reason for choosing this charity is due to the current president having been diagnosed with the disease in September 2016, aged 19.

Huntington’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that causes uncontrolled movements, emotional problems, loss of thinking ability (cognition) and overall loss of muscle control. Huntington’s can cause changes with movement, learning, thinking and emotions. Once symptoms begin, the disease gradually progresses, so living with it means having to adapt to change, taking one day at a time.

The HDA are there to help families who suffer from the illness, and have supported Ellis’ family since they received their first diagnosis, her grandma, a decade ago. Following this, both herself and her dad have tested positive for the hereditary disease, and have sadly lost her grandma. Since her own diagnosis, Ellis has spent a lot of time fundraising and trying to raise awareness to help other families like hers, as well as to say thank you for all the help she has received since. Therefore, we can’t think of a better way to fundraise and raise awareness than as a big team.

The HDA is a small but amazing charity, for which any donation, no
matter how big or small, will help a lot. They have made a significant impact on so many people’s lives and can continue to do so with our help. Let’s help to find that very much needed and all important cure!
