Not every newborn is as lucky as our younger son Mikael was, who survived the ordeal of having been born through my experience of an antepartum haemorrhage, hours before giving birth to him. Antepartum haemorrhage is a serious obstetric complication that imperils the life of both mum and baby. It is critical to provide immediate access to proper health care facilities where life saving measures will be taken to safeguard the well being of the mother and the child. While we had the good fortune of having such medical care close by, there are thousands of women in developing countries who do not. Obstetric haemorrhage remains one of the major causes of maternal mortality in the developing world and the cause of 50% of maternal deaths worldwide. Maternity Worldwide is a charity that works to provide pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa the chance to receive such care where the risk of maternal mortality at childbirth remains the highest. Thus, as Mikael turns two, we are raising funds to support the all important work of this charity, such that every woman and her unborn child may have the same chance we had.
