Maternity Worldwide has a vision of a world in which all women and their babies are able to access safe and appropriate childbirth regardless of where they live. We exist to reduce mortality and injury associated with childbirth in Sub-Saharan Africa where the risk of dying in childbirth is highest.

Story

That Philomena was with us for nine months was itself a miracle; but after an uncomplicated pregnancy of 41 weeks she unexpectedly died just over two hours before her birth. Her otherwise strong, unfailing heartbeat was suddenly just an echo.

She was born a beautiful baby girl of 8 lbs 3 oz, tall and with long, elegant fingers. Her shaken, but proud parents are indescribably grateful that we had grown to love her while she was still in the womb. Her little kicks and hiccups, as well as rhythmic fidgets when listening to music, were a constant delight.

What happened to us is a rare tragedy in the UK, but across the world many mothers and babies die through a lack of basic midwifery care. In remembrance of our darling first-born, we would like to raise money to save lives, and Maternity Worldwide is an ideal charity to support. If you would like to remember Philomena and help this cause at the same time, you can use this site to make a secure, easy donation.

Important: If you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Thank you for your support.
