The Langalanga Scholarship Fund supports the education of bright but very needy young people from the impoverished area of the Rift Valley around the town of Gilgil in Kenya. It provides the hope that poverty can be alleviated through education and the greatly increased chance of finding good employment.

Story

I have been training hard for several months in preparation for the Berlin Marathon on Sunday 26th September and was hoping that you might be able to sponsor me. Please dig deep and donate now!

I am raising money for a UK-registered charity, The Langalanga Scholarship Fund (www.langalanga.org.uk), which aims to support the secondary and tertiary education of bright but very needy young people from an impoverished part of Kenya.

Last time I ran a marathon, my generous sponsors provided sufficient funds for Langalanga to support a number of children through secondary school.

One of these, Charles Mburu Gitau, exemplifies the work of this excellent charity. Charles had performed extremely well in the national primary school exams, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). However, given his family background - rural subsistence farmers – his parents were simply unable to cover any of the fees and other associated costs of Charles attending secondary school. He was subsequently awarded a scholarship by Langalanga.

4 years later, he has just graduated with outstanding marks in the final secondary school exams – the Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). His marks are good enough for him to get into his top choice of university to study civil engineering. Charles and I are in regular correspondence and his strong commitment to put his education to use both supporting his extended family and in furthering the development of his country is absolutely clear.

Many thanks, Simon
