On Saturday August 13th, a team of 15 Balcas staff will hike 15km up
County Fermanagh’s Cuilcagh Mountain to mark the 15th birthday of
Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice (NICH). The trek climbs through
steep terrain and boulders fields before reaching the summit plateau. A
rough mountain path negotiates the wild summit plateau for a few
kilometres before reaching an ancient cairn (the remains of a burial
mound dating from the Bronze Age 2,500 – 500 BC) that stands at 666
metres (2,182 ft) above sea level. The summit affords amazing 360 degree views of the forests of Fermanagh and neighbouring counties which are harvested and maintained because of Balcas activities.
These mature and beautiful forests represent just one part of the Balcas
story, a cycle which begins with the planting of 15 million trees yearly. Those 15 million trees equate to 300,000 tonnes of Co2 saved
annually by Balcas, that’s the same weight as 40,000 elephants (that’s
every elephant in Asia!).
Beautiful Fermanagh is also home to Horizon West Hospice, a local NICH facility to whom we have committed to fundraise for essential services through sponsorship of our hike. Right on our doorstep, this amazing centre provides care for children and young people with life limiting conditions such as Muscular Dystrophy, neurological disorders, for which there is no known cure, and life threatening illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.
We hope to raise £1500 from the hike.
We also our invite our fellow SHV colleagues to literally help Shape Our Growth by joining this fundraising drive and staking your place in our family tree plot. In November, we will be planting and naming a wood in Colebrook Estate, County Fermanagh; ‘SHV for Hospice’ and a plaque will be erected recognising each contributor. This is a unique opportunity for you to become part of the 15 million story by helping us raise additional funds enhance the lives of children living with life threatening conditions in addition to demonstrating our green credentials.
