Nerve Tumours UK provides support and information, as well as campaigns and raises awareness on behalf of over 26,500 people in the UK who have NF, the group name for Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), NF2-related-Schwannomatosis (NF2) and Schwannomatosis (SWN).

Story

I would like to take the opportunity to raise some much needed money for a cause of personal significance to myself and my family.

Many of you may know our son Freddie. He was born 17th April 2004, a gorgeous and apparently healthy baby. At 6 months a consultant showed some concerns at the number of birth marks Freddie had developed over his body. Just after his 1st Birthday, at a follow up consultation, it was confirmed that Freddie sadly has a genetic condition, Neurofibromatosis (NF1).
Neurofibromatosis is one of the most common genetic disorders, affecting 1 in every 2,500 people world-wide including 25,000 in this country alone, yet few people have ever heard of it. In short, it is a genetic disorder that causes disability, disfigurement and in some cases premature death. It can affect any family, with no previous history of Neurofibromatosis, through new gene mutation.
As yet there is no cure
The NF Association believe there could be treatment available within the next 5 - 10 years which would give people like Freddie the real opportunity to lead a normal life, but in order to get there they need money to fund research. This research will look at both possible prevention’s and cures for the more serious effects that this condition can have on an individuals life. Currently Freddie remains a healthy and incredibly happy little boy and so far his development has been unaffected. However, this is not uncommon as many of the more serious effects of NF1 do usually occur later in life. We would like to raise as much money as possible to get one step further to ensuring that Freddie and others like him can enjoy a long and happy life, unaffected by their genetic condition.
