Story
My husband Mike died of Cancer, aged 39.
Given that he could do nothing to change his fate, we eventually enlisted the help of St Peter's Hospice, Bristol, so that he could be in charge of the way that he died.
He died at home, and if he had to die, no matter how heart-breaking it was, it was critical that he did it his way, under his terms...
St Peter's were priceless. Somehow we made it through various levels of Dantean hell. I am still not quite sure how.
You think that it's over when they die, but the truth is it is only just beginning. I have no doubt that the retaining of my sanity over the years, is in part due to the fact that together St Peter's and our family could play out his final weeks the way Mike wanted.
Nietzsche said "That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger". Maybe... I have come to terms with what has happened, but I'll never like it. I am lucky enough to have met many wonderful people along the way, who have re-taught me how to dream. Everest was one of our dreams. And now I am going...
Time does heal. Loved ones remain in your heart forever.
Time waits for no man, and so it is time to embrace all that Life offers.
It will be the 10th anniversary of Mike's death whilst I am on this trek.
To Mike, and to all those who have died before their time, this is for you.
