Story
Paris to Rio? Well, not quite. But on April 7th I’ll be scampering the 26.2 miles around Paris. And as many of you know (rather too graphically), training has been a long and bloody slog! But I’m doing it for the Street Child World Cup – this is the charity I want to support.
Next year, as the eyes of the world turn to Rio for the FIFA World Cup, street children from all over the world will get the chance to play their own tournament. For the kids, football provides an escape from the fear and uncertainty which torment their every day. But there’s more to it than the football. The SCWC will serve as a global campaign for street children, providing a platform for their voice to be heard and challenging negative public stereotypes. Ultimately, the charity hopes to see an end to the abuse and exploitation of street kids worldwide. They meet the needs of street children by investing in relevant local services and by implementing sensitive protection policies. Your support will help not only to put on the festival itself, but also to meet these wider global goals.
Here’s what some of the big boys make of all the fuss:
Archbishop Desmond Tutu: "The SCWC demonstrates the tremendous potential of every single child, and especially street children, who are so often treated as less than human."
Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP: “I commend the SCWC for providing a platform for the rights of street children to be heard.”
(Sir?) David Beckham: “I know from personal experience just what power football can have to inspire and change young people’s lives whatever their background or nationality. This is what the SCWC is all about and I give it my full support.”
